All eyes on MLA’s new beef campaign

Australia - Meat & Livestock Australia’s (MLA) biggest beef marketing campaign launches this Sunday, aiming to reach 14.6 million Australians with the message: ‘Nothing beats Beef’.

MLA General Manager Marketing Glen Feist said the number of Australians who will see the two new TV commercials will be greater than that of any other beef campaign in MLA’s history.

“We want to remind all consumers in Australia - our biggest market - how iconic and integral beef is in their everyday lives by rekindling their love for beef,” Mr Feist said.

“The beef campaign aims to engage consumers on a deeper level, reviving the strong emotional bond Australians have with beef and getting it back on top of the weekly menu where it belongs.”

The first commercial features a wedding lunch, with a focus on the ‘alternate drop’ and the extremes guests go to to get the beef, rather than the white meat alternative.

At recent pre-campaign launches with retailers across the country, over 300 butchers got a sneak peak of the new beef campaign.

“99% of the butchers agreed the new beef commercials would be a success with consumers and 90% said they planned to use the in-store campaign materials, including the popular Entice magazine, posters and cabinet stickers.”

Step towards Tasmanian forest agreement

Australia - Australia’s national forest industry body today announced that it has signed a Statement of Principles for the establishment of a longer-term agreement for the Tasmanian forest industry, as presented to the Premier of Tasmania today.

NAFI has been involved in talks between the Tasmanian forest industry, ENGOs, union and timber communities which resulted in a “Tasmanian Forests Statement of Principles to Lead to an Agreement” which was signed in Launceston last week.

NAFI supports the agreement but stresses that the process reflects the unique forest industry structure and market situation in Tasmania, and any final outcomes that may arise from this process are independent from other states or regions in Australia.

The document will set a framework for the State Government in the next stage of the process, which NAFI believes should be consistent with the legislative requirements and intent of the Tasmanian Regional Forest Agreement (RFA).

NAFI Chief Executive Officer, Allan Hansard said the negotiating process was challenging but welcomed the Statement of Principles as an important first step towards long-term certainty for the Tasmanian forest industry.

Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey meets the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Jigme Thinley

Mrs Calmy-Rey, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, and Mr Thinley talked for about an hour, during which the Federal Councillor congratulated the Bhutanese Prime Minister on the recent developments in the kingdom with regard to democracy, such as parliamentary elections in 2007 and 2008 and the introduction of the country’s first constitution.

Mrs Calmy-Rey reminded her visitor that Switzerland had been involved in development aid in Bhutan since the 1960s. From 1983 to 2006 Bhutan was one of the priority countries of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). At present the SDC’s work in Bhutan is focussing on good governance projects aimed at helping the country in its transition to a democratic state. A sum of some 8 million francs has been budgeted for the period 2008-2013. The SDC’s projects include in particular setting up a judicial system (training for judges and administrative staff) and a committee for fighting corruption, as well as a decentralisation programme.

In view of the fact that respect for human rights is closely linked to the introduction of democracy, Mrs Calmy-Rey expressed her pleasure that the death penalty had been abolished in Bhutan in 2004. This Himalayan kingdom is one of the first countries in Asia to join the group of nations that have abolished capital punishment. The situation of minorities and refugees was also addressed.
